The Tough Songs of John Berryman

John Berryman was arguably Jim Tulip’s favourite contemporary American poet. There was an opacity, a toughness in Berryman’s language that linked him perhaps with Australia’s Francis Webb, for whom Jim also had a passion. Jim wrote this essay in 1973 for the Southern Review published from the English Department, University of Adelaide:
