James Tulip wrote this important essay as The Inaugural Victor J. Couch Lecture for the Catholic College of Education Sydney on December 6, 1988. James was at this time both an Associate Professor of English Literature and the Chairman of the Board of Studies in Divinity at the University of Sydney.
